Bacteriostatic Water

Compound monograph CRL-SUP-BACWATER
01

Background

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, used as a diluent to reconstitute or dilute lyophilized preparations in laboratory settings. The benzyl alcohol inhibits microbial growth, permitting multiple withdrawals from a single container under appropriate handling.

Its composition and use are defined by pharmacopeial monographs rather than by primary research literature.
